Senior citizens or disabled persons may defer the payment of their property taxes and/or special assessments. Under the program, the Department of Revenue would pay these on your behalf. The deferred amount, plus interest, becomes a lien in favor of the state until the total amount is repaid.
The following qualifications must be met:
- You are at least 60 years of age at the time the claim is filed (or by December 31 of the filing year), or you must be unable to work due to disability
- You are, at the time of filing, the owner/buyer, or have an irrevocable trust for the property, and you must occupy the home as your principal place of residence
- Your annual household disposable income may not exceed $40,000; should your household income be less than $35,000 you must apply for the Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Exemption first
- You must keep in force a fire and casualty insurance policy in an amount large enough to protect the interest of the State of Washington
- You may defer up to 80 percent of the equity in your property, providing you meet all qualifications and maintain adequate insurance coverage
To file an application for this program, complete a Deferral Application for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons. This form, along with copies of the documents identified on the form, should be sent to: Department of Assessment & GIS, PO Box 5000, Vancouver WA 98666.
