Vancouver, WA – The Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to freeze for 2013-2016 salaries for the District 1 seat currently held by Commissioner Tom Mielke and District 2 seat currently held by Commissioner Marc Boldt.
The decision marks the third consecutive year commissioners have held the line on salaries in light of the weak economy. They returned raises scheduled for 2011 to the county General Fund. In 2012, they donated the scheduled raises to local non-profit community service groups.
State law allows commissioners to set compensation before the beginning of a new four-year term of office, but not during a term. Terms for Mielke and Boldt end in December. Compensation for 2013-2016 must be set before the Nov. 6 general election for new terms beginning in January.
The salary for District 3 Commissioner Steve Stuart must stick to the schedule the Board set in 2008 until his current term ends in 2014.
Tuesday’s vote means the salary for districts 1 and 2 commissioners will remain at $102,224 per year through 2016. The salary for the District 3 commissioner will be $104,224 for 2013 and $106,226 for 2014.
Similarly, the Board agreed to freeze the $600 monthly vehicle allowance for districts 1 and 2 until 2015, when it will increase to $700. Under the 2008 authorization, the vehicle allowance for District 3 will increase to $700 per month for 2013 and 2014.
