Vancouver, WA – Clark County will hold an open house from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, to honor County Administrator Bill Barron for more than four decades of public service, including nearly 15 years in his current position.

Barron plans to retire Sept. 10.

The Sept. 5 gathering will include presentations and light refreshments on the plaza in front of the county’s Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St., weather permitting. The event will move indoors if necessary.

Barron began his career in public administration in Lake County, IL in 1972, following four years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force. Key accomplishments as deputy county administrator included facilitating the expansion of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center; working with Congress for passage of the Local Government Antitrust Act of 1984; and, establishing the first county administrator form of government in Illinois. He became county administrator for McHenry County, IL in 1994.

After a nationwide search, the Board of County Commissioners hired Barron in 1998 to become the chief administrative officer for Clark County. Barron worked with commissioners to consolidate the county’s facilities; provide guidance and focus to Clark County’s Youth Commission and juvenile justice initiatives; and, transform a bi-county health district into Clark County Public Health.

“We have been incredibly fortunate to attract and retain an administrator with Bill’s dedication, intellect and skill,” said Board Chair Steve Stuart. “He has an amazing ability to bring passionate, talented and diverse people together to fulfill the county’s public service mission, creating public value for the citizens and organizations of Clark County.”

Barron’s commitment to public service extends further than his job as county administrator. He serves on boards of directors for Columbia Credit Union and Columbia Land Trust, is a member of the Washington State University Vancouver Advisory Council and has been an adjunct faculty member at the university. He also has participated in a number of civic and professional organizations.
