Importance of preserving the past

Why is archaeology important?

The life stories of people who lived long ago help us learn about our common heritage as human beings. Studying past cultures helps us understand how our own culture has developed, making us who we are today.

Preserving the Past

Historic book

While very old and fragile history books are treated with care and respect, the same is necessary for archaeological sites.

When someone loots or destroys an archaeological site, it is like tearing pages from the tales of past peoples.

Archaeological sites are protected by federal laws, state laws and county regulations.
