What is an archaeologist?
An archaeolgist is someone who studies the lives of humans who lived hundreds or even thousands of years ago. An archaeologist working in the state of Washington is required to be a "qualified" or "professional" archaeologist.
- "Qualified archaeologist" means a person who has had formal training and/or experience in archaeology over a period of at least three years, and has been certified in writing to be a qualified archaeologist by two professional archaeologists.
- "Professional archaeologist" means a person who has met the educational, training, and experience requirements of the society of professional archaeologists.
What is an archaeological pre-determination?
An initial study to determine if cultural resources exist within a project area.
What is an archaeological survey?
A survey is a process where archaeologists locate and compile information about cultural resources within a specific area. They do this by carefully removing layers of dirt (excavating) around artifacts while documenting and photographing them.
What are artifacts?
Objects made, modified, or used by people are called artifacts. Examples include projectile points (arrowheads), pottery, animal bones, ceramics, glass, and metal objects.
What does context mean?
Context means the surroundings in which artifacts and cultural remains are found, and their relationship to each other. 
What is curation?
It is organizing and maintaining a collection of artifacts in a museum or other setting.
What is a feature?
A feature is a permanent part of an archaeological site, such as a roasting pit, hearth, or post hole.
