The first step of a successful landscaping project is to develop a plan. Start by identifying your goals for the project. Do you want to create an attractive landscape? Maybe you want to create more natural habitat for fish and wildlife. Your goals will help you determine which plants are right for you.
Next, identify the conditions of your planting site. Native plants are more likely to survive when matched with the right conditions. A few things to consider include the amount of water and sunlight or shade your site receives, and its location, size, layout and soil type.
Knowing your soil type will help you select plants that will thrive in the area you are working in. Contact the Clark Conservation District at (360) 883-1987 for more specific information on soil types and good stewardship of your land.
Sketching a diagram of your project will help you envision the final result. The diagram below shows an example of a landscaping plan. You can also visit the King County’s Web site for an interactive landscape design tool that will help you map out your planting plan.
After you have identified your site conditions, you are ready to select your native plants.
