Comm. Dev. > Fire Marshal > Outdoor Burning

Outdoor Burning

Outdoor burning is not permitted from July 15 through September 30 each year. All burning permits will be rescinded between these two dates. Call the Fire Marshal's Office at (360) 397-2186 before resuming outdoor burning after September 30.

Are you in an area which allows outdoor burning?

Check these maps:

General outdoor and land clearing burning is prohibited throughout all of the county's cities and their associated urban growth areas. To determine if you are in an area where you can burn, please contact the Southwest Washington Clean Air Agency(SWCAA) at (360) 574-3058.

File a complaint regarding an outdoor burning air quality issue online at SWCAA's complaint Web page. After-hour complaints will be followed up on the next business day. A SWCAA representative will contact you during normal business hours to discuss the problem and potential ways to resolve it. Please provide as much information as possible and ways they can reach you for follow up.

Permits for general backyard burning and land clearing burning - in areas where burning is allowed - are issued through the fire marshal's office. Remember that the use of burn barrels is illegal.

Permits for small open burning fires (debris pile size less than 10 feet in any dimension) can be obtained below or at your local fire district station.

Instructions for small debris pile open burning permits:

  1. Print the Burn Permit Form. (PDF - 22K)
  2. Carefully read all sections.
  3. Fill out, sign and date.
  4. Keep with you on-site

Burning permits for general land clearing and for debris piles in excess of 10 feet in any dimension can be obtained at the Permit Services Center located at 1300 Franklin Street in downtown Vancouver, at the Battle Ground Service Center located at 1808 SW 9th Ave. Bldg C, Suite 101 in Battle Ground, and at the Fire Marshal's Office located at 505 NW 179th Street in Ridgefield. There is a $141.00 fee for land clearing and large debris pile permits.
