Vancouver, WA − To save time and money and speed service, attorneys and government agencies doing business with Clark County District Court must file certain documents electronically, starting Sept. 1.

The new local rule applies to pleadings related to an open court case, new cases and answers to writs of garnishment. Documents longer than 500 pages can be filed electronically or by hand.

“It’s one less trip to the courthouse, and attorneys can avoid congestion,” said Ela Selga, District Court administrator. “It’s faster processing. With ex parte civil cases, for example, processing has gone from 15-21 days down to a three-day turnaround.”

Some documents cannot be e-filed in District Court. They include:

• Certified records of proceedings for purposes of appeal
• Negotiable instruments
• Bail bonds
• Documents presented for filing during a hearing or trial
• Documents of foreign governments under official seal

People who are not attorneys and wish to represent themselves must file paper documents, Selga said.

Attorneys and government agencies must register with District Court before they begin e-filing documents. A new case can be filed after fees are paid and a case number is obtained from District Court.

Electronic filing is not yet available in Clark County Superior Court.
