Cooking fire determined cause of fatal fire Friday in Sifton area

Jon Dunaway, Fire Marshal
Phone: (360) 397-2186 ext. 3324

Vancouver, WA – A fire that killed a Sifton-area woman in her home Friday began on the stove top, then spread through the kitchen and much of her single-story residence, the Fire Marshal’s Office concluded Monday.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the woman as Donna M. Franchino, 58. Cause of death was smoke inhalation, the Medical Examiner said.

“Fires caused by cooking equipment remain the leading cause of fires in the home,” said Jon Dunaway, Clark County Fire Marshal.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking equipment was the leading cause of house fires and residents’ injuries and the third leading cause of house fire deaths from 2007 through 2011.

“Being alert and keeping anything that can catch fire away from the stove top is extremely important to preventing a fire,” Dunaway said. “If you have a cooking fire, leave the house and close the door to help contain the flames. Call 9-1-1 outside the home or from a neighbor’s house.”
