Vancouver, WA County residents can recycle block foam from holiday presents, along with used electronics items, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, at Fisher's Landing Transit Center, 3510 S.E. 164th Ave.

Empower Up, a local nonprofit organization that recycles electronics, will accept computers and other electronic equipment. Refurbished computers are given to students, families in need and nonprofit organizations.

Working electronic equipment no more than 5 years old is preferred, but nonfunctioning and obsolete equipment will be accepted. No televisions, computer monitors or microwave ovens will be accepted. For a list of free e-waste disposal sites that will accept old TVs, go to RecyclingA-Z.com.

Block foam packaging can be any color, but it must be clean and bagged or boxed. No plastic-wrapped yellow urethane foam or spongy polypropylene foam, hot tub covers, packing peanuts and foam with cardboard, tape or metal attached will be accepted.

Total Reclaim, a Portland recycling business, grinds and melts block foam into ingots, which reduces the foam's volume by roughly 98 percent. The ingots are shipped to other processors and turned into pellets. The pellets have the same quality as new plastic and are used to manufacture picture frames, office products and other items.

Only residents of Clark County and its cities may participate in the free collection. All participants must remain on site until staff has examined and accepted the material.

Businesses are eligible to bring in small loads of foam, no bigger than what will fit into a passenger or cargo van. Larger business loads should be taken to Total Reclaim at 5805 N.E. Columbia Blvd., Portland, during the company's regular weekday hours.

Block foam also can be dropped off for recycling at the back of Empower Up Reuse Center, 5000 E. Fourth Plain Blvd., between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
