Vancouver, WA – Clark County is accepting applications for internships under a new agreement with Washington State University Vancouver, to provide students with field experience while they prepare for careers in environmental fields.

The three-year agreement calls for the county to provide mentors in environmental sciences and related fields starting in January. Applications are due to the county by 5 p.m. Dec. 20.

There are four opportunities:

• Natural resources – Duties include collecting samples from county waterways, entering data from water samples and assisting with research and analysis.
• Noxious weed control – Duties involve surveying and mapping noxious weeds, community outreach and volunteer events to control noxious weeds.
• Sustainability – Duties include preparing reports on county operations, assembling recycling and waste diversion reports and assisting with the Green Neighbors, Green Businesses and Green Schools programs in Environmental Services.
• Digital technology – Duties include working with websites and social media.

“This is an exciting partnership,” said Don Benton, Environmental Services director. “I am proud of our department and WSU Vancouver and thrilled we can bring the two together to further our environmental mission and give local students a real hands-on experience.”

The program dovetails with curriculum requiring students to receive work experience. “We are grateful to Clark County. Internships enable students to apply what they’ve learned. Students benefit from real-world exposure, and the organization benefits from the fresh ideas they bring,” said Renny Christopher, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Interns will earn $10 an hour, for a maximum of $1,500. Applicants should submit letters of interest and résumés to Pete DuBois, Environmental Services program coordinator, (360) 397-2121 ext. 4961 or
