Vancouver, WA County residents can recycle block foam from holiday presents and used electronics between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Fisher's Landing Transit Center, 3510 S.E. 164th Ave.

Empower Up, a local nonprofit organization that recycles electronics, will accept computers and other electronic equipment. Refurbished computers are given to students, families in need and nonprofits.

Working electronic equipment no more than five years old is preferred, but nonfunctional and obsolete equipment will be accepted. Microwave ovens and cathode ray tube televisions and computer monitors will not be accepted. For a list of free e-waste disposal sites that accept old TVs, monitors and microwave ovens, go to RecyclingA-Z.com.

The event will accept only clean, white, expanded polystyrene block foam that is bagged or boxed. This foam often is marked with a recycling symbol and the number 6.

The event will not accept plastic-wrapped, yellow urethane foam or spongy polypropylene foam, food trays, foam film, hot tub covers, packing peanuts and foam with cardboard, tape or metal attached.

Total Reclaim, a Portland recycling business, grinds and melts block foam into ingots, which reduces the foam's volume by roughly 98 percent. Ingots are shipped to other processors and turned into pellets, which are the same quality as new plastic and used to manufacture picture frames, office products and other items.

Only residents of Clark County and its cities may participate in the free Jan. 4 collection. All participants must remain on site until staff has examined and accepted their material.

Businesses may bring loads of foam no bigger than what will fit into a passenger or cargo van. Larger business loads should be taken to Total Reclaim, 5805 N.E. Columbia Blvd., Portland, during the company's regular weekday hours.

Block foam also can be dropped off at the Empower Up Reuse Center, 3206 N.E. 52nd St., between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
