Public Health Advisory Council

Video feature: Public Health Advisory Council

The Public Health Advisory Council was created by the Board of County Commissioners in its capacity as the Clark County Board of Health. The purpose of the council is to advise the Board of Health on:

  • improving the health of the citizens of Clark and Skamania counties.
  • promoting public participation in and identification of public health needs.
  • providing for communication between the Board of Health and the citizens of Clark and Skamania counties.

The council provides a direct link between the Clark County Board of Health and the Clark and Skamania communities-at-large in order to provide a local focus on public health.

In 2005-06, the council identified several issues of public health importance, including (in part): methamphetamine use, child health, infectious disease control and prevention, emergency preparedness, protection of groundwater, oral health and fluoridation challenges, healthy community growth, healthy aging, overweight and obesity and protecting the food we eat.

The council meets the third Tuesday of every month from 6 to 8 p.m. in the main conference room on the second floor of the Center for Community Health at 1601 East Fourth Plain Boulevard, Vancouver, Washington. 2007 Awards for Healthy Community Design and Sustainable Community Design
The Clark County Public Health Advisory Council, in cooperation with Clark County Community Development and Clark County Public Health, presented the 2007 Awards for Healthy Community Design and Sustainable Community Design on May 14, 2007 at the Hilton in Vancouver, Washington.  The awards recognized a Clark County (1) site plan or subdivision plan or completed building project that illustrates how the built environment can facilitate increased health for our residents; and (2) building design or project that increases the long-term sustainability of our community through reduction of pollutants or conservation of resources.  Award winners were honored with a scholarship donated in their name to Washington State University-Vancouver to assist students interested in health policy, community design or community sustainability.

The award for healthy community design was presented to the Vancouver Police Department for its East Precinct campus at Southeast 155th Avenue and Mill Plain Road.  National standards for energy and environmental design were incorporated in the building, while the five-acre campus includes a community park and playground named in honor of the 1948 Olympic gold medal skier from Vancouver, Gretchen Fraser.

The sustainable community design award went to a collaboration between New Tradition Homes and Washington State University Extension.  "Energy efficiencies in new homes" is the theme in this collaboration of the Vancouver builder and WSU.

The featured speaker, Dr. Richard Jackson, discussed how the planning and construction of a community affects the health of its residents.
