Monitoring natural swimming areas helps prevent outbreak of disease |
Like that of the Pools and Spas program, the Public Beaches work assures that natural bathing areas (lakes, rivers and other recreational swimming beaches) are safe and healthy.
How is this done?
Public health:
- surveys each of the bathing beaches to determine significant problems and sources of potential for disease outbreaks
- develops best management practices for each swimming area
- provides ongoing monitoring of the natural bathing areas
- provides public health education through pamphlets, onsite signs and personal contact; emphasis is placed on prevention of feces getting into the water by having infants and toddlers wear tight-fitting swim diapers
- notifies the public about any beach closures
- provides life jackets to non-swimmers at attended swimming areas
