Protecting yourself and your family
In any kind of health emergency, protecting yourself and your family will be your first priority. Because health emergencies, just like natural disasters, can happen with little or no warning, Clark County Public Health is asking you and your family to join us in planning for them in advance. What can I do to protect my family?
Clark County Public Health is working with community partners to prepare for the possibility of a worldwide (pandemic) flu. Health officials are concerned that a pandemic flu could happen if the H5N1 bird flu becomes a disease that people can easily pass to each other.
Although this type of bird flu has not reached North America and is currently not easily spread from person to person, we want to be prepared in case that changes, or another very contagious type of flu develops. A pandemic flu could spread illness and death on a much larger scale than regular seasonal flu. Widespread illness could disrupt personal lives, businesses, schools, and other public services.
Every action you take to plan for a health-related emergency will help us all be more prepared. Your planning will also help prepare you for an earthquake, volcanic eruption, flood, winter storm, or other disaster. To start, we recommend you review the checklist for individuals and families prepared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or the Washington Department of Health Preparing for Pandemic Influenza Guide.
