This bridge was designed by Harold H. Gilbert, and was built by the Gilpin Construction Company of Portland, Oregon. Although there are many timber suspension bridges in Washington State, the Yale Bridge is the only example of a short-span steel suspension bridge. The visual impact of the parabolic curve of the cable stretching between the two towers has a universal appeal. Short-span steel suspension bridges remain rare because the costs do not compete with simple steel truss bridges, cantilevers or arches.
This bridge replaced a steel truss bridge which was demolished as a result of the construction of the Ariel Dam.
