The Rural Lands Task Force had its final meeting on July 22. The Task Force recommendation has been forwarded to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) for review.
Project Summary
Current rural land zoning in the county was established in 1994 with the adoption of the County's first comprehensive plan under the Growth Management Act (GMA). The County has completed two comprehensive plan updates since then (2004 and 2007), but their focus has been on urban areas and how to accomodate projected growth. After completion of the 2007 update, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) directed a review of rural lands.
The Rural Lands Review is planned to be completed in two phases.
The first phase is to develop a rural vision of the county, and to define what the GMA calls "rural character". This is scheduled to be accomplished during the June and July task force meetings, and will be presented to the public in August and September 2008.
The goal of the second phase will be to examine County policy and to ensure that the County's comprehensive plan reflects the rural vision. The process will likely include a review of land uses, parcel sizes, and rural centers. It is expected that this phase of the process will take a year or so and be completed by the end of 2009.
The Rural Lands Task Force was appointed by the BOCC in May 2008.
