Health officials find Vancouver Lake safe for swimming
Vancouver, WA — Clark County Public Health has lifted a health advisory for recreational use of Vancouver Lake following test results that indicate blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is no longer a threat to the health of people and pets.
The advisory, which cautioned against direct water contact, had been in place since July 22 due to high levels of blue-green algae. “We are pleased to announce that the lake is again safe for swimming and other recreational uses,” said Dr. Alan Melnick, Clark County Health Officer. Clark County Public Health conducts water quality testing every two weeks at Vancouver Lake May through September each year.
Since 2004, the Vancouver Lake Watershed Partnership has conducted discussions and studies aimed at understanding Vancouver Lake’s complex eco-system and the factors that may contribute to the lake’s cyanobacteria blooms. The partnership includes the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, Clark County, Port of Vancouver, City of Vancouver and the Fruit Valley Neighborhood Association. More information about the partnership is available at www.vancouverlakepartnership.org.
