Philip Services’ in Washougal to end household hazardous waste service Dec. 1
Vancouver, WA – Dec. 1 will be the final collection day for household hazardous waste at the Philip Services’ facility in Washougal.
The collection site is being phased out following last June’s opening of the Washougal Transfer Station, 4020 S. Grant St. The Washougal Transfer Station accepts household hazard waste from Clark County residents at no charge the third Saturday of each month, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Household hazardous waste has been collected at the Philip Services’ site, 625 S. 32nd St., the first Tuesday of each month, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Philip Services’ site has served more than 3,000 county residents since its opening in May 2001.
Household hazardous waste includes pesticides, paints, solvents, batteries, thinners, motor oil, antifreeze and household cleaners. Look for signal words, such as poison, danger, warning, caution or flammable, on the label to help identify household hazardous waste.
These wastes should never be disposed of in a ditch, on the ground, down a sewer or storm drain, in a septic tank or in the trash. For proper disposal, take these items to any of the Clark County household hazardous waste sites or mobile collection events.
Besides Washougal, there are two other collection sites for household hazardous waste in the county:
Central Transfer and Recycling Center
11034 N.E. 117th Ave.
(360) 256-8482
Saturday/Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
West Van Materials Recovery Center
6601 N.W. Old Lower River Road
(360) 737-1727
Friday/Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Collection facilities have a 25-gallon or 220-pound limit and do not accept unlabeled products, empty paint cans or containers, leaking containers, explosives, ammunition, radioactive material, biological and infectious materials, or hazardous waste generated by businesses.
Mobile collection events are held on a periodic basis. Call Clark County Public Works, (360) 397-6118, ext. 4352, for more information on when these events will be scheduled in 2010.
Waste Connections, the garbage-recycling company that serves most of Clark County, also provides limited curbside recycling of some household hazardous waste. Pour used motor oil and antifreeze into clear one-gallon containers with screw-on tops and place them alongside recycling carts. Put household batteries into clear sealable plastic bags and place them on top of recycling carts.
