Vancouver, WA – The Weight of the Nation, a new four-part documentary on America’s obesity epidemic, premiered Monday on nationwide television. Clark County Public Health is sponsoring a free screening of Children in Crisis, the series’ third episode, at 5:30–7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Vancouver Community Library, Columbia Room, 901 C St.

“We encourage people to attend this screening, learn more, and get involved,” said Tricia Mortell, chronic disease prevention manager. “With one in three Clark County children now overweight or obese, this truly is a community crisis. If we don’t take action now, we could see the first generation of kids to live shorter lives than their parents.”

At the screening, several community groups will share information about preventing childhood obesity and offer opportunities for people to get involved. The groups include Kids Cooking Corner, Bike Clark County, Clark County Homegrown Gardens and One Team. They and others have joined Public Health in the national Let's Move campaign to increase community efforts to prevent childhood obesity. For more information, see http://www.letsmove.gov/.

The Weight of the Nation is a presentation of the Institute of Medicine in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.
