Vancouver, WA – Construction is set to begin Monday, July 16, to replace Cougar Creek Bridge (#1409).

The project will replace a 77-year-old timber bridge with a precast concrete girder bridge and make it safer to cross the creek on Northeast Washougal River Road.

A private contractor, Conway Construction Co. of Ridgefield, will close the road from Milepost 5.1 to 5.2, until the project is completed this fall. Clark County is offering an incentive for Conway to finish construction and open the road as soon as possible.

The closure will require extra coordination because the July 21 Washougal MX National can draw more than 20,000 spectators to the motocross park at 40205 N.E. Borin Road.

Drivers should plan to use alternative routes and allow a few minutes longer to reach destinations near the narrow, curvy road. Spots to turn around are limited, especially for trucks and other large vehicles.

Another way to get to the motocross park is from Salmon Falls Road in Skamania County. The county website at www.clark.wa.gov/publicworks/roads/cougar.html has a map and other project information.

About 50 signs alerting drivers to the bridge closure and detour will be posted on public roads leading to the bridge and creek crossing, along with signs directing traffic to the motocross park.

East County Fire & Rescue is prepared to send crews to either side of the bridge to respond to emergencies.

The 27-foot-long bridge was built in 1935 and partially rebuilt in 1959. It is one of only two remaining wood structure bridges among the county’s 78 bridges.
