Vancouver, WA – Clark County’s new Adopt-A-Road program offers opportunities for volunteers interested in reducing litter and enhancing the environment along Clark County roads.

Volunteers adopt a road section, typically about 2 miles long, and make a two-year commitment to pick up litter there at least three times annually. The county also may approve weed control, graffiti removal and other roadside work.

The county will provide all supplies and equipment for cleanup events, as well as post signs recognizing volunteer groups. Volunteers must agree to adhere to a list of safety rules.

The program applies only to county roads outside city limits. No city, state, federal or private roads are eligible for adoption through this program.

The county has identified about a dozen road sections suitable for adoption. A list of available road sections, an application and other information are available on the county’s website at www.clark.wa.gov/publicworks/roads/adopt.html.

Volunteers also can propose adopting other road sections. Public Works will assess a proposed section for shoulders, sight distances and other safety considerations before deciding whether to approve the request.

“Safety always will be the county’s foremost consideration,” said Karen Llewellyn, Volunteer Program coordinator for Public Works. “Although we would like to see most county roads adopted, we also want to be careful in determining where volunteers can work safely.”

Most individuals or groups are eligible to participate in the program, as long as their name does not endorse or oppose a candidate or advocate a position on a specific legal issue, initiative, referendum or legislative proposal.
