All outdoor burning banned statewide through at least Oct. 15

Continued dry conditions pose extreme fire hazard

Vancouver, WA – The Clark County Fire Marshal, in accord with Gov. Chris Gregoire’s emergency proclamation Sunday, is reminding county residents that all outdoor burning is banned through at least Monday, possibly longer.

A burn ban in place for several weeks was expanded Sunday to include all campfires, whether in an improved campground or the woods. Now, all land-clearing, yard debris, weed abatement, trash disposal and recreational fires of all types are prohibited in all Washington counties until at least 11:59 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15.

Gas-fueled stoves are permitted over a non-flammable surface and at least five feet from flammable vegetation. Charcoal grills are permitted at private homes under the same conditions.

The all-fire ban is mandatory. It can be enforced by any Washington law enforcement officer. Violating the burn ban is a gross misdemeanor that carries the penalty of up to a year in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000.

Fire Marshal Jon Dunaway said the ban could be revised if the region receives a significant amount of rain. While some rainfall is forecasted for the weekend, residents should not assume the burn ban will be lifted unless it is announced publicly or verified by calling the Fire Marshal’s Office (360) 397-2186.

The ban will help protect people, property and animals.

“Washington is experiencing a weather pattern like one we’ve rarely seen before,” Gov. Gregoire said Sunday. “Extraordinary dry conditions across our state require all Washingtonians exercise the utmost caution and allow fire crews to focus on the challenges at hand.”

Dunaway will announce when the ban is lifted, but please check with the Fire Marshal’s Office at (360) 397-2186 before burning anywhere.
