Vancouver, WA – Residents will have an opportunity next week to meet with representatives from Clark County and other organizations regarding the cleanup at Camp Bonneville.

An open house is scheduled 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Vancouver Fire Station 4 (Sifton), 6701 NE 147th Ave. Drop by any time during the open house to talk with officials from the county, the Washington State Department of Ecology, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Weston Solutions Inc., the general contractor.

Cleanup resumed in June to remove unexploded munitions and other hazardous materials from 85 years of military training at the former U.S. Army base east of Vancouver. These munitions include small arms ammunition, artillery shells, shoulder-fired rockets and grenades.

The Army is paying for the cleanup and related activities. Agreements with the Army shield the county from financial responsibility for the cleanup.

The Oct. 17 open house also will provide information on the county’s forest stewardship work at Camp Bonneville and a recent EPA assessment of a plume of contaminated groundwater previously identified below an old Army landfill/disposal area on the property.

Clark County has long-term plans to use a portion of the 3,840-acre property as a regional park once the cleanup is completed. The county also has agreements with law enforcement agencies to use firing ranges and other areas for training.
