Vancouver, WA – The used oil collection site in the parking lot of the Shell station at 404 N.E. 78th St. will close on Wednesday, Oct 31 to make room for remodeling.

County records indicate that more than 52,000 gallons of used oil have been collected at the station since the service began in 1993.

Used motor oil should never be dumped down a storm drain, poured onto blackberry brambles and other vegetation, or placed in the trash. One gallon of used oil improperly disposed of can pollute 1 million gallons of fresh water, enough water to supply 50 people for an entire year.

Used motor oil can be cleaned and reused at refineries or blended and used as an alternative fuel source.

Clark County residents have a number of opportunities to property dispose of used oil:

Curbside Recycling Service
Single Family Curbside Recycling – Pour used motor oil into a clear one-gallon container with a screw-on top, such as a milk jug. Make sure the lid is on tight and place next to your blue recycling cart.

Multifamily Curbside Recycling – Follow procedures in place at your complex. If your facility allows do-it-yourself vehicle maintenance, handle used oil the same as you would at a single-family residence.

Clark County residents may take used motor oil to any transfer station during the times and dates listed. Transfer stations will not accept more than 5 gallons per visit or containers larger than 5 gallons.

Household Hazardous Waste Satellite Collection Events
A calendar of collection events is available on the county website at: www.clark.wa.gov/recycle/A-Z/Resources/Mobile-HHW.html.

Motor oil taken to any drop-off site or collection event should be poured into a container with a secure cap for safe transport. Retail shops sell convenient reusable oil containers for this purpose. Used oil should never be mixed with other vehicle fluids, such as gasoline, solvents or antifreeze.

More information about disposal of used motor oil is available on the county website, www.clark.wa.gov/recycle/A-Z/Materials/oil.html, or by calling Clark County Environmental Services, (360) 397-2121 ext. 4352.
