Charity Road expected to reopen with gravel surface later this week

Vancouver, WA Clark County started repairing Northeast Charity Road today and expects to reopen the closed section of road later this week. It likely will have a temporary gravel surface until weather allows for asphalt paving.

Meanwhile, residents and visitors have access to all homes in the area. Other traffic is following a three-mile detour clearly posted on both sides of the washout.

The repair will replace a culvert with a larger one following a washout that caused the road to collapse early Saturday just south of Northeast Beasley Road near La Center. A plugged culvert under the road apparently caused water to back up and undermine the pavement.

The county began repairs as soon as it received approval from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to install a 60-inch culvert. The new culvert will decrease the likelihood that debris could clog it in the future.

When the bigger culvert is in place, the county will fill the breach with gravel, securing the gravel at both ends with boulders. Gravel will be compacted in layers to create a firm roadway.

The forecast calls for rain to return to the region on Wednesday. That could prevent the county from repaving the repaired section until there is another break in the weather.
