Vancouver, WA – A new type of traffic signal will debut today in Clark County.

Crews are scheduled to update the existing traffic signal at Northeast 88th Street and Northeast 25th Avenue. The signal’s cycle will include a flashing yellow arrow for traffic on Northeast 88th Street turning left onto Northeast 25th Avenue.

During a flashing yellow, drivers may turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic, pedestrians and cyclists. Drivers should not creep out into the intersection, but wait behind the white stop line until there is a sufficient gap in oncoming traffic and no pedestrians or cyclists.

Flashing yellow arrows can reduce congestion and prevent traffic from backing up at some intersections. They are used in Vancouver and parts of the Portland metropolitan area, but this is the first intersection in unincorporated Clark County to use technology that might be new to some drivers.

Clark County intends to add flashing yellow arrows at these intersections later this year:

• Northwest Lakeshore Drive and Northwest 99th Street – Upgrade the existing traffic signal to include flashing yellow arrow left turns from Northwest Lakeshore Drive onto Northwest 99th Street.

• Northeast Parkview Drive and Highway 99 – Add a southbound left-turn pocket on Highway 99 and upgrade the existing traffic signal to include a flashing yellow arrow left turn onto Northeast Parkview Drive.

• Northeast 20th Avenue and Northeast 144th Street – Install a new traffic signal that includes flashing yellow left turns from Northeast 20th Avenue onto Northeast 144th Street and the entrance to Kaiser Permanente.

• Northeast 50th Avenue and Northeast 119th Street – Install a new traffic signal that includes flashing yellow left turns in all directions.
