Vancouver, WA – With many families still struggling in a weak economy, Clark County will once again collect donations for emergency food boxes at the 2013 State of the County gathering Thursday March 14.

Experts estimate that children are up to 40 percent of those who lack adequate food supplies, in families with parents working or looking for work. Many others are elderly or disabled.

The event will be open to the public 4-6 p.m. at Prairie High School, 11500 NE 117th Ave. Donations will help supply the North County Food Bank with non-perishable items including peanut butter, pasta, rice and chicken, tuna, fruit and beans in cans. Pet food, school supplies, household cleaning supplies, reusable grocery bags and financial contributions also are welcome.

More than 1,000 pounds of food were collected at State of the County 2012, to feed more than 100 people for several days.

“We’re looking forward to collecting at least that much again this year,” said Steve Stuart, 2013 chair of the Board of County Commissioners, who plans to speak along with Commissioners Tom Mielke and David Madore.

Formal presentations will begin at 4:45 p.m., following light refreshments in the school commons. The commissioners also plan to recognize volunteers for extraordinary efforts in 2012.

Driving directions from Vancouver: Take SR 500 eastbound until it becomes SR 503 (Northeast 117th Avenue) northbound. Turn left on Northeast 119th Street and left again on Northeast 112th Avenue, to enter the parking area.

For those unable to attend, the program may be viewed later on CVTV (Clark-Vancouver Television) Channels 21 and 23.
