Vancouver, WA – Universal Green Design will be the topic of the Tuesday, April 16, meeting of the Commission on Aging.

The meeting will be 4:30-6 p.m. in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St. It is open to the public, and a chance for Clark County residents to share concerns about needs of local residents.

Jim Wilson, A.I.A. emeritus, will share the basics of universal green design. With more than 42 years promoting healthy, independent environments, he brings a unique approach to daily living. As a member of the Aging Readiness Task Force, he co-authored housing strategies focusing on universal design. He currently is a member of the commission’s housing subcommittee.

Universal Green Design (UGD) is a long-term approach to building and remodeling that combines environmentally sustainable elements of green building with the flexibility of universal design.

Universal green design’s goal is simple: make products and places adaptable to people of all shapes, sizes and abilities. Universal green design includes functional elements that accommodate all generations over time. It offers ideas for remodeling or building so that your house can remain your home as your lifestyle changes. Many people want to remain in their homes safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability. Universal green design helps make that possible.

Following a national trend, Clark County’s population of 60+ is growing and projected to almost double by 2030. The Board of County Commissioners appointed the aging commission, an advocacy panel, to help the county and local cities implement an Aging Readiness Plan. It has 91 strategies about housing, transportation, recreation, lifestyle choices, support services and civic and social engagement.
