Vancouver, WA – A $4 million project to improve sight distance and safety on Northeast 119th Street near Northeast 50th Avenue begins next week. The intersection will be closed May 22.

Tapani Underground of Battle Ground will construct the improvements under a contract with Clark County Public Works. The county expects to reopen the intersection by early fall. Detour information is detailed online at

“We look forward to everyone’s cooperation in making the road safer and easier to travel,” said Peter Capell, Public Works director. “Patience will be greatly appreciated while detours are in effect.”

The project will raise the intersection by about 6 feet and lower a hill to the east by about the same amount. It also will add a traffic signal and left-turn lanes in all four directions.

Right-turn lanes will be built from Northeast 119th Street onto Northeast 50th Avenue southbound and from Northeast 50th Avenue onto Northeast 119th Street eastbound. Sidewalks, retaining walls and facilities for polluted storm runoff also are included.

Federal grants will cover $2.2 million of the expense. The County Road Fund will invest $1.1 million, with $700,000 coming from private sources, including traffic impact fees.

Clark County last month sent out mailers to residents in the area alerting them to the upcoming work. Temporary signs also will direct drivers near the construction area.

The county also has worked closely with Battle Ground Public Schools on alternatives bus routes and bus stops and has coordinated with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, fire departments, 911 dispatch and other emergency responders.
