Vancouver, WA – Volunteers are needed to help with the fifth annual National Get Outdoors Day event Saturday, June 8.

The free event is an opportunity to learn about and try outdoor recreational, educational and nature-based activities. It will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1115 E. Fifth St.

Remember: Interstate 5 will be closed June 7-10 for construction of the Salmon Creek interchange bridge at 139th Street. Plan to take Interstate 205 north- or southbound and allow extra time for traffic. For details, go to www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/I5/ne134thi205/_I5Closure.htm#drivers.

Get Outdoors Day introduces participants to the joys of being outside close to home.
Attendees can get up to speed on climbing, Frisbee golf, biking, hiking, walking, gardening, birding, fishing, boating, camping, backpacking and nature study.

The event will include an 1840s brigade encampment re-enactment, complete with cooking and beading demonstrations, children’s games and music.

Volunteers are needed to help set up the encampment Thursday, June 6. Other volunteers are needed at the event to dress as animal mascots, act as mascot guides, help clean up and assist visitors.

“Many community members have already stepped forward, but an event of this caliber requires a large cadre of volunteers,” said Karen Llewellyn, volunteer program coordinator for Clark County Public Works.

Event sponsors include Clark County, Vancouver, Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation, U.S. Forest Service, Parks Foundation of Clark County and National Park Service.

“This is a great way to promote our parks right here in Vancouver and Clark County,” said Vicki Vanneman, special projects manager with Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation.

More information on volunteering is available at www.tinyurl.com/getoutdoorsday or by contacting Karen Llewellyn at (360) 397-6118 ext. 1627.
