Vancouver, WA – Volunteers will gather Saturday, Oct. 26, for the third annual “The Butt Stops Here” cleanup to remove cigarette butts and other litter from parks.

Volunteer programs for Public Works and the City of Vancouver are coordinating the cleanup, which will be held in conjunction with Make a Difference Day.

The event begins with a brief orientation at 10 a.m. in the Bud Van Cleve Community Room at Luke Jensen Sports Park, 4000 N.E. 78th St. Volunteers will break into small groups and fan out to parks and public areas in Vancouver and unincorporated Clark County.

Organizers will have a list of parks, but volunteers are encouraged to come to the event with a specific park in mind. Volunteers will need to provide their own transportation. At about 12:30 p.m., volunteers will return to the sports park to weigh bags of cigarette butts and litter. Lunch, courtesy of Blind Onion Pizza, will be served until 1 p.m.

Last year, 55 volunteers collected 25 pounds of cigarette butts and another 12 bags of garbage during “The Butt Stops Here” cleanup.

Cigarette and tobacco debris account for an estimated 32 percent of litter in parks and recreation areas. Cigarette butts contain chemicals that are carried by polluted storm runoff into streams, rivers and wetlands, where they can harm fish and other aquatic life.

“This is an important day when people truly make a difference in communities across America,” said Karen Llewellyn, volunteer program coordinator for Public Works. “Cigarette butts are a major eyesore. Events like this one not only clean up our parks, but they also focus public attention on the issue and discourage littering.”

Remember to dress for the weather and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, but organizers will provide gloves and garbage bags.
