Laurie Cornelius to receive Public Health Community Award at May ceremony

Vancouver, WA— The Clark County Board of Health will recognize Laurie Cornelius for her leadership in promoting communitywide initiatives that improve the health of children and families. She will receive the 2014 Public Health Community Award at the Board’s monthly meeting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

Cornelius is the director of services for Children and Families at Clark College. There, she oversees the Oliva Family Early Learning Center, the largest training ground for child care providers in Southwest Washington. Cornelius helped shape the center’s outdoor learning space, which has been recognized nationally as a model. She also secured financing to address childhood obesity through a program that focuses on nutrition and movement.

Outside her job duties, Cornelius has raised money for the Child Abuse Assessment Team at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, helped found SELF (Support for Early Learning and Families), and served on the Board of Directors of Education for Children and Families (EOCF).

2014 Public Health Community Award Honorable mentions:
• Michelle Ahmed, of Sea Mar, Breast Health Program, for encouraging women to get mammograms and make time for their own health and well-being.

• David Bilby, founder of Go Connect, for fostering community partnerships among faith communities, schools, residents and social service agencies to provide support for vulnerable populations.

• Clark County farms, for helping ensure a safe, local food system while contributing to community health, quality of life and economic health.

• Sandy Mathewson, director, Prevention Center, ESD 112, for leading efforts to work collectively on policy, systems and community-based prevention efforts.

• Southwest Washington Health Care-Associated Infections Taskforce, for decreasing the incidence of health care-associated infections and improving outcomes for patients.

• WSU Extension, Food Safety and Nutrition Program, for providing fun, effective nutrition education to low-income families in Clark County.
