Vancouver, WA – Chair Tom Mielke and Commissioner David Madore Tuesday selected Edward L. Barnes, a long-time member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, to fill an unexpired term on the Board of County Commissioners.

The Commissioner District 3 seat had been vacant since early April when Steve Stuart, the board’s only Democrat, resigned to take a job as Ridgefield city manager.

To fill the position, the Clark County Democratic Party submitted names of three District 3 residents interested in serving on the board. All three candidates were interviewed last week. Barnes was selected over former county commissioner Craig Pridemore and Kelly Love Parker, president of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.

He will be sworn in at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, prior to the board’s regularly scheduled meeting in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.

Barnes retired as business manager for the IBEW Local Union No. 48, and he has held other union positions dating to the 1960s. He has been involved in labor issues in the region, serving on numerous boards and committees. From 1995-2007, Barnes served on the Washington State Transportation Commission. He also has served on several community boards, including Ronald McDonald House and Open House Ministries Housing Project. He served family and children organizations ranging from 4-H to Little League.

He is a graduate of Vancouver High School and studied at Wharton School of Business, University of Oregon and Marylhurst College. He is a Korean War veteran.
