Vancouver, WA – Clark County received four top awards for public information tools in the 2012 National Awards of Excellence Competition sponsored by the National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO).

NACIO is the communications wing of the National Association of Counties (NACo). Professionals working in fields such as communications, graphics, video production and community relations selected the 2012 award winners, which were announced last week during the counties’ annual convention in Pittsburgh.

The county earned three first-place awards among counties with fewer than 500,000 people:

• Special projects: Managing Stormwater
Clark County Environmental Services formed a partnership with local cities to address issues with private stormwater facilities. Stormwater Partners of SW Washington engaged county staff to design, write, edit and produce a variety of materials, including a comprehensive guidebook for property owners, mailers, leaflets, signs, advertisements and a website.

• Websites and Interactive Media
A special website for Stormwater Partners was the launching pad for education aimed at cleaning up numerous private stormwater facilities. Clean up is necessary to improve water quality, preserve habitat and fish spawning grounds, avoid or alleviate erosion or flooding and safeguard public health.

Locally, the editorial page of The Columbian newspaper commended the site,, as an outstanding public resource: “The clear and concise information … deals with an amazingly complex scientific subject, but it is written in layman’s terms that can help any citizen looking for answers.”

• Graphic design – brochures and publications
The latest Recycling Directory makes it fast and easy to find out how and where to recycle items that do not belong in a garbage can. It’s available online at

In addition, the county received one second-place award:

• Annual reports – Magazine or newsletter format
The 2011 Report to the Community by Clark County Public Health is easy to read and sharply focused, with real-life examples about how people become and remain healthy through important community partnerships, despite economic hardship. The report can be found online at
