Design workshop

Clark County hosted a workshop to gather design ideas about planning for the area between Northeast 63rd and 134th streets, Highway 99 and the BPA right of way on October 8, 2008.

The underlying vision or concept for Highway 99 is to create a vibrant community.

Throughout the Community Design Forum, specific design recommendations were discussed to support the vision. A concept plan was developed to illustrate integrated neighborhoods and regional activity centers. The activity centers are characterized as regional destinations for adjacent neighborhoods; offering a lively mix of uses with store fronts, sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and other commercial uses at street level. They are beneath a canopy of shade trees, upper story residences and/or offices combined with a pedestrian-friendly mixed-use environment.

The community is inter-connected with sidewalks, bicycle lanes, trails, parks, and open space. This vision revolves around an enhanced and active community linked by a future high capacity transit system which includes bus rapid transit or streetcar system.

At the workshop, the concept plan was presented for community input and refinement.

Community input gathered throughout the development of the Highway 99 Subarea Plan will be used to develop a hybrid form-based design and streetscape standards. Draft code language will be completed in Winter 2009. Both the Planning Commission and the Board of Clark County Commissioners will review the draft code language and hold public hearings before taking formal action. If adopted by the Board, the new code language will become part of the county's Unified Development Code Title 40.

Clark County hosted a Community Design Forum on September 27, 2007 to gather ideas about planning for the area between Northeast 63rd and 134th streets and Interstate 5 to roughly 39th Avenue to the east.
