August 5 voters' pamphlet - Opposing statements needed
Greg Kimsey, Clark County Auditor
Each year the Clark County Auditorís Office publishes a local votersí pamphlet for the Primary election. The pamphlet is mailed to all households in Clark County. Included in the pamphlet are statements and photographs for the candidates for elective office as well as supporting and opposing statements for local ballot measures appearing in the Primary election.
Often, our office only receives a supporting argument for a local ballot measure and no opposing statement is submitted. The legislative body responsible for placing a local measure on the ballot has the opportunity to identify and appoint a committee to write a supporting statement and an opposing statement. If they cannot identify anyone who they know opposes passage of the ballot measure, then no opposing statement gets written and submitted. If our office does not receive a supporting or opposing statement to a local ballot measure appearing in the primary or general election, we attempt to identify citizens who would be interested in authoring such a statement.
We have received ballot propositions from the Town of Yacolt and the Clark County Emergency Medical Services District No. 1. The measures will refer to the voters a one-year excess levy at the rate of approximately $1.50 per $1,000 assessed valuation, to be used for maintenance, operation and staff salaries for the North Country Emergency Medical Service for an estimated three-year period. Committees have been appointed to write statements supporting the measures. They have not been able to identify anyone willing to write a votersí pamphlet statement against the measures.
If any citizen is interested in writing an opposing statement for either of these measures, they are urged to contact Cathie Garber at the Clark County Elections Department by calling (360) 397-2345. They should do this no later than 5 p.m., Monday, May 19.
County auditor Greg Kimsey stated, ďThe public is best served by having a local votersí pamphlet which presents a fair and balanced debate on the merits of local measures submitted for a vote of the citizens. We urge anyone who is interested to help us get their supporting or opposing statements to these local measures into the local votersí pamphlet."
