Preventive care

Preventing health problems is cheaper than treating them

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 out of every 2 Americans currently lives with a chronic disease. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are now the number one cause of death in the U.S.

These statistics translate into annual health care costs in the trillions that continue to escalate. But the Harvard School of Public Health reports that only $251 is spent per person on public health measures that prevent medical conditions before they occur.

As local, state and national attention focuses on improving our health care systems, more emphasis is being given to preventive care.

Regional Health Alliance

The Southwest Washington Regional Health Alliance (RHA) seeks to achieve:

  • Better care for individuals
  • Better health for the population
  • Lower health care costs

The RHA is a collaboration of local, tribal and state governments, health plans serving at-risk populations, hospitals, local providers, other insurers, and the people they serve. The goal is to manage resources efficiently and effectively.

Training opportunities

Free online training teaches community health workers core competencies and disease specific skills.

  • Offered quarterly in seven regions across the state
  • Trainees attend two in-person sessions and a six- week assisted online training.
  • Participants will receive a certificate upon completing the training.

Training for health care providers

Collaborative Learning for Healthy Communities is a Washington State Department of Health (DOH) initiative in support of creating comprehensive, patient-centered medical homes that meet the majority of patients’ physical and mental health care needs. DOH offers many collaborative learning opportunities for health care providers, such as in-person trainings, webinars, coaching and other technical assistance.
