Food Day events highlight community benefits of locally grown food

Vancouver, WA − Food Day, Thursday, Oct. 24, is a nationwide celebration of healthful, affordable and sustainably produced food, as well as policies that improve access to healthful food and support local food systems. Healthy eating is key to preventing some chronic diseases, which result in seven in 10 deaths in the U.S.

“Food Day is a great opportunity to evaluate our diets and look for healthier choices,” said Kachina Inman, Public Health program coordinator. “That means cutting back on sugary drinks, high-sodium packaged foods and processed meats in favor of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and sustainably raised protein.”

Several local events will focus on connections among fresh, locally grown food and community health. They include:

• Tuesday, Oct. 22, 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Fort Vancouver High School students will harvest 1,500 pounds of carrots and squash at 78th Street Heritage Farm for the Clark County Food Bank. The students helped plant the produce last spring.
• Wednesday, Oct. 23, 9 a.m.: In a presentation to the Board of Health, Clark County Food System Council will highlight successes in school nutrition programs that include fresh produce and whole grains.
• Thursday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m.-noon: About 100 second-graders from Image Elementary School will harvest about 600 pounds of pumpkins and carrots at the 78th Street Heritage Farm for the Clark County Food Bank. The experience broadens students’ understanding of where their food comes from, increases their acceptance of different fruits and vegetables, and improves their knowledge of subjects such as weather, nutrition and community service.
• Friday, Oct. 25: Community members will participate in a “Serving Up Smiles” event in Battle Ground schools, where they will meet elementary school pupils, serve them lunch, and show them how nutritionally balanced school lunches can be fun to eat.
