On October 3, 2006, the U.S. Army transferred ownership of Camp Bonneville to Clark County. The county then transferred the deed to its cleanup contractor, the Bonneville Cleanup, Restoration and Rejuvenation Trust (BCRRT). The contractor will hold the deed during the duration of cleanup, a process that could take up to four years. After the property is cleaned to Department of Ecology standards and when it is safe for citizens to use, the county will begin implementing the reuse plan.
Following an extensive public involvement process, the county produced an initial reuse plan in 1998 that identified a variety of preferred uses as a regional park. This plan has been updated as recently as March 2006, and serves as the primary guide for removal of hazardous wastes and unexploded ordnance from the site.. A citizen's advisory group, selected by the Board of Clark County Commissioners, will be a key component of the future public effort to develop a final reuse plan by the time the site is available following cleanup. This citizen's group will be in place later this fall. See the Public Involvement section of this site for more information.
Although timber management will be one source of revenue at Camp Bonneville, there will be no large-scale clear-cutting on the property. Selective thinning will be conducted in phases to maintain forest health and reduce fire hazards.
