Most roads in the project area have at least base paving, and many are completed and striped. The project is ahead of schedule and will be complete by the end of 2008.
Project Number: 301422
Project Limits: NE St. Johns Road from NE 50th Ave. to NE 72nd Ave.
Current Phase: Construction started in August 2007
Project Type: Widening existing two-lane road to a five-lane Principal Arterial
Project Update Flyer (PDF 134K)
This project widened St Johns Road to a 5-lane Principal Arterial configuration with four travel lanes, raised median with turn pockets, bike lanes and sidewalks. The old road had only two lanes, no median and an approximate one-foot shoulder. The intersection of St. Johns Road and NE 72nd Avenue has been reconfigured and a new signal installed.
The project also improved a portion of NE 72nd Avenue, from NE 110th Street north through the intersection of St. Johns Road and NE 72nd Avenue. Drainage improvements, wetland mitigation, and other utility modifications (sewer and water) have been included in the project. The project also included some minor realignment work at NE 109th Street to correct a severe crossing angle.
The speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph throughout the project area, and speed bumps added to protect drivers and construction workers. Total project cost, including all utility work, will be about $13.6 million. Construction is ahead of schedule and may be substantially complete by December 2008.
Why is Clark County doing this project?
The previous roadway was inadequate to serve the needs of this growing area of the county. When complete, this project will reduce traffic congestion while meeting the safety needs of the traveling public including bicyclists and pedestrians. A companion project along N.E. 72nd Avenue will further improve travel in this area. That project should also be complete by year's end.
Environmental Information
Both the St. Johns and NE 72nd Ave. roadway improvement projects affect wetlands. Local, state and federal environmental regulations require mitigation for these impacts.
Building wetland mitigation includes digging out existing soil to drop the ground elevation and allow water to pond slightly and create a higher quality wetland. Woody debris has been added. Several thousand native plants will be planted, then maintained and monitored for a period of ten years. The grading and planting plan was thoroughly reviewed by permitting agencies over the course of several years.

Road widening is nearly complete along St. Johns Road. The new road will include some median planter strips. These are complete for most of the project and will be planted later this year. |
