Ward Road-NE 172nd Ave.
Intersection Realignment

Project Number: 350422

Project Limits: NE Ward Road and NE 172nd Avenue

Current Phase: Beginning this Thursday, May 28, NE 99th Street will be closed at the intersection with NE 172nd Avenue near China Ditch in eastern Clark County. This is part of the larger NE Ward Road Intersection Realignment Project.

NE 172nd Avenue has been closed since April but the intersection with NE 99th Street has remained open until now. Construction work is expected to start on NE Ward Road by mid June. Ward Road will also be closed at that time in the vicinity of China Ditch.

$6 million project supports local construction jobs

Construction began April 27 to realign and significantly improve this intersection. Work started with closure of NE 172nd Avenue between NE Ward Road and NE 99th Street to allow for utility relocation.

The $6 million construction phase will support about 60 private-sector jobs. When road work starts in June, the contractor will construct a new intersection east of China Ditch including left turns lanes, improved road shoulders and drainage, and a new traffic signal.

NE 172nd Ave. closed

Utility realignment work is nearly complete on NE 172nd. This road segment between NE Ward Road and NE 99th Street will remain closed until a new intersection opens on the northeast side of China Ditch

Speed bumps

The county put temporary speed bumps on a nearby residential street to discourage cut-through traffic while NE 172nd and NE Ward Road are closed.

Why is the county doing this project?

More than 12,000 vehicles travel this section of NE Ward Road daily. This intersection has one of the highest accident rates in the county. The realignment project will create a much better way for northbound motorists on NE Ward Road to turn left onto NE 172nd Avenue.

Project Timeline

A contractor has been selected and should begin road construction work by early June. This will require closing Ward Road within the project area. Motorists will be detoured onto NE 152nd Avenue and NE 119th Street. The contractor has six months to complete all work, and will receive a bonus for finishing the project earlier.

Environmental Work

This project will build two, new bridges over China Ditch. The first bridge will carry the realligned portion of NE 172nd Ave. and the other will replace the existing Ward Road bridge. The county will also improve management of stormwater runoff affecting the waterway. This work complies with all local, state and federal environmental requirements to protect fish in China Ditch.
