The new bridge and roadway feature improved storm water collection,
conveyance and treatment. Preventing direct runoff of polluted storm water into the creek improves water quality.
This project directly affects Salmon Creek, which supports salmon, steelhead and trout populations along with other plant and animal species. Salmon and steelhead that use the creek are listed as “threatened” by the federal Endangered Species Act. Environmental permits defined how construction could proceed while minimizing impacts to aquatic life. The streambed restoration removed a partial fish barrier and enhanced aquatic habitat.
Improvements in this reach of Salmon Creek have been identified by the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board as a critical area for restoring historic habitat throughout the Salmon Creek sub-basin. The in-channel improvements will also help prevent future stream erosion and protect the bridge.
