Vancouver, WA – A full day of activities will begin at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, June 16, for the dedication of Luke Jensen Sports Park, 4000 N.E. 78th St.

Parking is limited. Please carpool and park at King’s Way Christian Schools, 3300 N.E. 78th St., if possible.

Luke Jensen was a student at King’s Way, just west of the park. He died from leukemia at age 9 in May 2010.

Rain or shine, the day will start with a flag raising in memory of U.S. Army Cpl. Jeremiah Johnson. He played T-ball for Salmon Creek Little League, one of the sports park’s primary users, and went on to become a standout center-fielder at Prairie High School. In December 2006, he was injured while on duty in Iraq and died 10 days later.

The flag raising will include a color guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Vancouver Post 7824. Britnee Kellogg, a contestant on “American Idol” and a vocalist with 5 Guys Named Moe, will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Saturday’s schedule also includes:

• 9 a.m. Salmon Creek Little League Championship games

• 11:30 a.m. Salmon Creek Little League Closing ceremonies, including announcement of All-Stars

• 12:30 p.m. Board of County Commissioners, Luke Jensen Family Official park dedication

Clark County Public Works and Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation developed Luke Jensen Sports Park as part of the Greater Clark Parks District. Most construction is complete, except drainage for two grass fields.

The park includes:
• A large synthetic turf field with scoreboards, lights, dugouts, bullpens and batting cages that can be used for a variety of organized sports.
• Two natural grass baseball/softball fields, both with scoreboards and one with lights.
• Two smaller synthetic turf fields for T-ball and soccer.
• A restroom/concessions building with upstairs meeting space.
• A playground, tables, benches and other amenities.
• Parking lots and a new access road between Northeast 78th and 82nd streets.

Funding for the $9.1 million project is from property taxes collected by Greater Clark Parks District and real estate excise taxes from the sale of local property.
