Vancouver, WA – A private contractor working for Clark County has set Monday, July 2, to begin widening and improving a 1.7-mile section of Northeast 88th Street in Hazel Dell.

Earlier this month, the Board of County Commissioners awarded an $11.7 million contract to Rotschy Inc. of Clark County to improve the street, from Highway 99 east to Northeast St. Johns Road.

The project is expected to support more than 100 jobs in the local area, where unemployment continues to exceed national and regional averages.

Construction will be in three phases, with workers concentrating on one road section and, when possible, leaving the rest open to traffic. Rotschy intends to complete the western section – Highway 99 to Northeast 25th Avenue – this fall, weather permitting. The entire project is expected to be finished in October 2013.

Inside the construction zone, the street will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles, school buses and private vehicles for those who have no other way to reach homes or businesses. Drivers who must enter the construction zone should expect delays. All other traffic should detour to Northeast 78th Street.

“Safety is and always will be the county’s No. 1 consideration,” said Bart Arthur, a Public Works construction engineer. “A construction zone can be a tempting place for children to play. We need parents to keep them safe and out of the construction area at all times.”

The Northeast 88th Street project will:
• Rebuild one travel lane in each direction and add a continuous left-turn lane.
• Install bicycle lanes, planter strips, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
• Replace utility lines and build stormwater improvements, including rain gardens to collect and treat polluted storm runoff in some planter strips.

Total cost is estimated at $18.4 million, including design, property acquisition and construction. More information is available on the Northeast 88th Street project’s webpage: www.clark.wa.gov/publicworks/roads/88th.html.
