Vancouver, WA – Clark County’s Salmon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant has been recognized for 100 percent compliance with laws and regulations to protect the environment during 2013.

The Washington State Department of Ecology’s “Outstanding Performance” award honors the Salmon Creek plant for passing environmental tests, analyzing water samples, submitting reports on time and finishing the year without any permit violations, such as sewage spills.

There are about 330 sewage treatment plants in Washington, of which 126 were honored for perfect compliance with environmental laws and regulations during 2013.

“Sewage treatment is one of those services we all use but don’t always think about,” said Kay Hust, Salmon Creek plant manager. “That’s actually good because it means we are doing our job, serving the public and protecting the environment.”

Fourteen county employees work at the Salmon Creek plant, which treats sewage from Clark Regional Wastewater District and city of Battle Ground. The plant serves about 36,000 households with an estimated population of 77,500.

Last week, the Board of County Commissioners agreed to transfer the plant to the Discovery Clean Water Alliance, a regional sewer partnership involving Clark County, Clark Regional Wastewater District and the cities of Battle Ground and Ridgefield.

The transfer will take place at the start of 2015, although Clark County will continue to operate the plant at least through 2019.
