Vancouver, WA – The number of seniors who will need public housing is growing, as are the costs to provide it. Nationwide, public housing authorities are working to meet the needs of seniors so they can age in public housing safely, independently and comfortably.

Learn how our local public housing agency is working on the issue at the Tuesday, Oct. 18, meeting of the Commission on Aging.

The 4:30 p.m. meeting will be in the sixth-floor hearing room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St. It is open to the public.

Roy A. Johnson, executive director of the Vancouver Housing Authority, will be the speaker. Johnson has vast experience in housing development finance. He led development of Vista Court Apartments, a downtown Section 8 property for low-income seniors, and Camas Ridge Apartments and First Street Apartments, both affordable mixed-income properties in east Clark County.

The Oct. 18 discussion is the 10th of 11 meetings this year focused on housing for older people. Research shows that 87 percent of people prefer to retire in place and will need accessible, affordable housing.
