Rain and snowmelt pose potential problems for septic systems

Vancouver, WA – Recent heavy rain on top of snowmelt has prompted concerns about water flooding into septic systems and saturating drain fields. Clark County Public Health is advising property owners of homes and businesses with septic systems to self-inspect their drain fields and tank locations for sewage that surfaces during the next two weeks.

If sewage or other obvious problems are found, consult a certified inspector. A list of certified inspectors is available at www.clark.wa.gov/public-health/site-septic-systems.

By reducing water use during periods of heavy rain, septic system owners can help prevent sewage from surfacing outside or backing up into the house. Limiting water use also helps drain fields recover.

Tips for reducing water use include:

  • Use paper products instead of dishes that need washing.
  • Instead of washing all household laundry on one day, wash smaller loads throughout the week or use a local laundry facility.
  • Take shorter showers or shower less frequently.
  • Don’t flush toilets as often.
  • Fix leaking toilets. They can contribute gallons of water to your septic system.

As a general safety measure, remember to secure septic tank lids to prevent accidental injury or people and pets from falling in.
