Vancouver, Wash. - Trees are an essential component of a healthy, livable community. Trees and other natural features provide environmental benefits, such as clean air and water. They also beautify our streets, significantly increase property values, and improve our mental and physical health and well-being. Learn how trees and urban forestry contribute to the livability of our communities at the next meeting of the Commission on Aging, 4:30 pm Wednesday, May 15.

The meeting will be in the sixth-floor Hearing Room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.


• Elections

Vancouver, Wash. – The Clark County Auditor’s Office is sponsoring a campaign workshop, “Winning Ways to Run for Office – A Candidate / Campaign Worker Workshop.’’

The free workshop takes place on Tuesday, May 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Clark County Elections Office, 1408 Franklin St.


• Public Health

Vancouver, Wash. – Clark County Public Health has declared the local measles outbreak over, after six weeks with no new cases. Public Health confirmed 71 cases of measles during the months-long outbreak.

Two confirmed cases previously included in the Clark County totals have been removed. Those two individuals moved to Georgia during the outbreak and are being counted in that state’s measles case numbers. The Clark County total does not include King County and Oregon cases that have been linked to the local outbreak.


• Clark County Council

Vancouver, Wash. – A volunteer advisory commission tasked with evaluating options and providing recommendations to replace the county jail yesterday decided to move forward with the assumption the jail will need 850 to 880 beds by 2050.

“This is a significant step toward ensuring Clark County has sufficient beds for future needs while being mindful of the cost to our community,” said Chair Craig Pridemore.


• Treasurer

Vancouver, Wash. – The Clark County Treasurer’s Office announced a pilot program for property tax payments. For first-half payments due April 30, Treasurer Alishia Topper will be opening a drive-through tax payment window.

In response to customer feedback on parking, Topper is adding a convenient drive-through drop-off at the parking structure kiosk at the Public Service Center at 1300 Franklin St. on Monday, April 29, and Tuesday, April 30, from 9 am to 4:30 pm. The kiosk is near the Franklin Street entrance to the parking garage.


• Treasurer

Vancouver, Wash. – Clark County Treasurer Alishia Topper reminds residents that first-installment 2019 property taxes are due on Tuesday, April 30.

“If you have not received your 2019 first-installment tax statement or have lost it, please visit our website at www.clark.wa.gov/treasurer or contact the Treasurer’s Office at 564.397.2252 for a duplicate statement,” Topper said.

The Treasurer’s Office is located on the second floor of the Public Service Center at 1300 Franklin St. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm.


• Community Development

Vancouver, Wash. – Clark County is providing an online survey to receive feedback on prioritizing surface mining impacts and resolutions.

A link to the survey, hosted by Survey Monkey is on the county’s website at www.clark.wa.gov/community-development/surface-mining-advisory-committee. It will be available beginning today, April 22 through Friday, May 10.

The survey takes about 3 minutes to complete.


• Public Health

Vancouver, Wash. – This Earth Day, Clark County Green Business is celebrating five new businesses joining the sustainability program this year.

The Green Business program offers resources and onsite assistance to help businesses operate efficiently, reduce environmental impact and offer employees healthy workplaces. The program, coordinated by Clark County Public Health, recognizes and celebrates these achievements with Green Business certification.

Currently, 87 businesses are certified with the program, which launched in 2012.


• Community Development

Vancouver, Wash. – Earlier this month, Clark County Fire Marshal Jon Dunaway and four other County Fire Marshals from southwest Washington met with officials from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to discuss the outlook for the upcoming wildfire season. 


• Public Health

Vancouver, Wash. – The Clark County Council is seeking applicants for a volunteer position on the Solid Waste Advisory Commission.

The position represents southwest Clark County. Applicants must live west of State Route 503/Northeast 117th Avenue, or the extension thereof, and south of Northeast 179th Street. This includes those living in areas of Salmon Creek, Felida, Lake Shore, Hazel Dell, Fairgrounds, Minnehaha, Walnut Grove, Five Corners, Pleasant Valley and west Vancouver.

The three-year term will begin June 1 and end May 31, 2022.
