Vancouver, WA – You might want to think twice the next time you apply chemicals on your lawn or dig out those pesky weeds. They could be in your next meal. The world of foraging for wild edibles opens up a range of possibilities for what you can do with weeds in your yard. Langdon Cook, an award-winning author in Seattle, will present a slideshow of tips on how to identify, gather, cook and preserve a variety of wild edibles at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Vintage Books, 6613 E. Mill Plain Blvd. He will provide information for gathering wild edibles such as greens, mushrooms, berries and shellfish. Cook has published two books, “Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager” and “The Mushroom Hunters: On the Trail of an Underground America.” Both books delve into the culture of foraging and chronicle the adventures of the author and others who forage to supplement their diet. Cook also teaches foraging classes and has been published in magazines, newspapers, and online journals. The June 11 event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Green Neighbors, a Clark County Environmental Services program that provides information about sustainable living. “Gathering and cooking dandelions and other wild greens, like many of our grandmothers used to do, is a lost art,” said Don Benton, Environmental Services director. “This event will open your eyes to all sorts of edible plants right in your own neighborhood.” For more information, go to www.clarkgreenneighbors.org.
